What is SWOSS?

SWOSS stands for “Student Workshop of the Ocular Surface Symposium”.  It is a workshop that was created to expose optometry students to the most contemporary clinical protocols along with providing them the opportunity to utilize the most contemporary technologies in ocular surface disease management.

 

Who is eligible to have a SWOSS program?

Any College of Optometry in the United States is eligible to participate in the SWOSS program.

 

What can I expect of the SWOSS program?

The SWOSS program is a three-hour workshop.  It is comprised of a 45-minute lecture along with question period followed by a 2-hour workshop.  During the workshop, students will learn more about specific technologies from both the companies that produce the technologies along with clinicians who have had experience utilizing the technologies.  Additionally, students will get hands on experience utilizing many of the most contemporary technologies currently available?

 

Why was SWOSS created?

An increased understanding of the ocular surface has been accelerated in recent years by technologies that we have access to.  As such, third and fourth year optometry students will have access to technologies upon graduation that will improve the way they care for patients.  This program was created to help supplement the educational process with hands on experience with all of the newest technologies available in the realm of ocular surface disease.
